The Friends of the Waterford Public Library will sponsor a Craft Festival on Saturday, September 27, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at O'Connor Park, adjacent to the Waterford Public Library, 117 Third Street, Waterford, NY. The event will take place rain or shine. Artists and crafters of hand-made items are invited to sell their wares and support the Library by renting vendor spaces for $20 each. Special parking for vendors, rest room facilities, and a light food vendor will be available. Friends of the Library will provide respite assistance for single crafters. No electricity will be available. Vendors will provide a table up to 8-feet in length, chairs and a trash bag. Registration is required by September 6, 2008.
Interested vendors can telephone 237-7152 for information and registration. The Friends of the Waterford Public Library work with the Library Director and Library Trustees to support and advance the services and goals of the Library.

Glimmerglass Opera has announced that soprano Lyubov Petrova will make her company and role debut as Cleopatra in the company’s new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, which will run July 6 through August 23 at the Alice Busch Opera Theater in Cooperstown, New York. Earlier this month, the company announced that soprano Mary Dunleavy is pregnant and had withdrawn from the role of Cleopatra in consideration of her health, the health of her baby and in the best interest of the Glimmerglass production. A new production, Giulio Cesare in Egitto will be sung in Italian with English projected titles and will run approximately three hours, including intermission. The five sessions will take place at Bright Hill Press in Treadwell, NY. *SPECIAL NOTE: Sunday morning demonstration and portfolio showing will be open for the public with a small admission charge of $20 after which the 'hands on" workshop will begin. This workshop offers an exciting opportunity for painters, teachers, photographers and printmakers to learn and experience an innovative, safe etching process from the master printmaker who conceived and developed it. Dan will demonstrate his easy and spontaneous etching process that utilizes the sun and ordinary tap water, replacing hazardous acids solvents and grounds. AnimaLovers, the Animal Welfare League of the Capital District is sponsoring a day of entertainment, crafts, and games on Saturday, August 23rd, from 10 AM to 3 PM at The Crossings in Colonie (Albany Shaker Road, just east of Wolf Road). The event, which is a fund-raiser for the organization, will help the organization in their efforts to control animal population, provide adoption services for dogs and cats, as well as providing for the care and housing of abandoned animals. Refreshments will be available, and music will be provided by Bluegrass Musicians-The Grassroots Rebels- from 1PM to 3 PM. There will also be Basket Raffles and the special feature of the day will be the Blessing of the Animals at 2 PM.

The Friends of Pruyn House will celebrate the 25th annual “Old Fashioned Sunday” at the Pruyn House Complex, 207 Old Niskayuna Rd., Newtonville, on Sunday September 7th from 12 noon to 5pm. The public is invited to this free event. Old Fashioned Sunday is a festive fun day in a lovely setting at this 5 ½ acre site. The historic house built between 1825 and 1830 will be open for touring. The day will feature music throughout the afternoon featuring three different bands from the Town of Colonie. A number of attractions are planned including old tyme craft demonstrations, exhibits, vendors, visiting the beautiful gardens and other outbuildings such as the one-room schoolhouse, carriage house and tool museum. For children, there will be pony rides, face painting, storytelling, a magician, an art show and live animals. There will be homemade baked goods as well as vendors selling hamburgers, hot dogs, soda, ice cream and popcorn.

A benefit chicken BBQ will be held for Magglio Boscarino, at Giffy's Chicken Bar-B-Q at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg Street, Rotterdam on September 7th from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Magglio has a very rare disease called infantile type2 glycogen storage disease (a/k/a) Pompe Disease). This disease occuares from a lack of normal enzyme inside the muscle cells which affects the skeletal muscles and heart muscles. The National Kidney Foundation of Northeast New York and the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York are combining forces for a brand new fundraising event called the CHILI CHALLENGE. It will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 5pm to 8 pm at Michael’s Banquet House in Latham presented by WGNA. This event’s used to be held in the area and attracted close to 1,000 people.
